Lama Temple

The Lama Temple is the most renowned Tibetan Buddhist temple outside of Tibet. With its graceful rooftops, exquisite frescoes, stunning arches, intricate tapestries, and awe-inspiring carpentry, it is definitely worth a visit for any Chinese culture enthusiast.

Built in 1694 by Qing Emperor Kangxi for his son, Prince Yongzheng, this magnificent temple consists of five main buildings lying on a north-south axis with annexed halls to either side. Given its historical importantance, the Temple is under special protection by the Chinese Government.

Inside the Lama Temple, there are three sites that are considered masterpieces: The 18m (60ft) high Maitreya Buddha statue, carved from a 26m (over 85ft) long white sandalwood log; the “Five Hundred Arhat Hill”, a carving made of gold, silver, copper, iron, and tin; and a Buddha’s Shrine wood carving.
